Diversity at Work image

"We have an incredible responsibility to lead with humility and act with humanity, using our voice to engage in deeper conversation with the people who trust us to fulfill our mission’s work."

– Brian D. Pieninck, President & CEO

At CareFirst, we practice empathy, seek to understand, invest in inclusion, demand equity and nurture belonging every day for our associates and the communities we serve. We rely on the rich diversity of our associates’ experiences and backgrounds to achieve our mission.

We are proud to say:

In 2019, we proudly led our first Day of Equity and Action. On this day, 5,000 CareFirst associates gathered across five locations to develop skills for creating new dialogues and greater understanding of each other and our communities.

  • Women make up more than 70% of CareFirst’s associate population, and 50% are of ethnic minority.
  • Our multigenerational workforce is more than 20% millennial, and more Generation Z associates are joining the team.
  • Over 1,400 associates (more than 25% of our population) participate in one or more Associate Resource Groups (ARGs).
  • 98% of associates completed unconscious bias awareness training at the Day of Equity & Action in 2019.

CareFirst Associate Resource Groups (ARGs)

Our Associate Resource Groups (ARGs) are associate-led groups formed around diversity elements like ethnicity, age, military status and sexual orientation. They help associates connect with each other and help retain a diverse workforce.

ProPride engages lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender (LGBT) associates and friends to raise awareness and understanding of LGBT inclusion issues and opportunities. The group supports local pride parades and helps inform the company about LGBT healthcare needs in our region.

Military & Veteran Resource Group

The MVARG attracts many of our military and veteran associates, as well as military families and friends working at CareFirst. This group helps veterans transition to and succeed at CareFirst through programs and activities held throughout the year.

Young Professionals Resource Group

For early to mid-career professionals, this ARG provides opportunities for associates to gain new skills, expand their networks, create mentoring relationships and navigate a multi-generational work environment.

Wellness Resource Group

The Wellness Resource Group encourages associates on their health and fitness journey. The group also serves as ambassadors for CareFirst’s wellness activities in the community.

Black Professionals Network

The Black Professionals Network serves the unique needs of its community, including hearing the concerns of associates with African origin and promoting their rich cultural heritage through events held each year.

Hispanic Associate Resource Group

This ARG champions Hispanic and Latinx cultural awareness, promotes cultural diversity, and provides professional development and networking opportunities to associates in support of Hispanic and Latinx communities.

Asian Associate Resource Group

This group celebrates the rich heritage of Asian cultures and addresses their unique needs and interests. They are focused on building awareness of Asian cultures at CareFirst for better collaboration and to enjoy mutual respect.

Working Parents Associate Resource Group

The Working Parents and Caregivers ARG provides social support and networking opportunities for working parents and caregivers. It analyzes company resources and recommends program improvements to promote the well-being of parents and caregivers.
